Survive the night by riley sager
Finally!! Finally, a thriller with a plot so complex that I was positively hooked! It’s definitely a slow burn in the beginning but when it does pick up pace, you’re in for a crazy ride! Riley Sager books are usually on an autopilot buy for me & this one did not disappoint either.
I was constantly thinking that this book would make a great movie, every chapter is written like a screenplay with each scene depicted by the camera location (interior, exterior) etc. So, I would suggest you read this book as a screenplay & imagine you’d be seeing this happening, that will definitely tip the scales.
The book is set in the 90’s. So, no phones and no Uber. The only way to call or ask for help is through pay phones. The story starts with Charlie Jordan. She is an obsessed film theory major at a college in NJ and is looking to share a ride back home to her grandmother in Ohio. There is a campus killer on the loose & her best friend Maddy was the latest victim.
Charlie is so overcome with grief and guilt over this that she cannot stay another day in college & she accepts a ride share home with a total stranger, Josh. And get this, Josh can only leave at around 9.15 pm. So, it’s going to be a night drive! #BIG MISTAKE.
I’m sorry but whatever the situation you just don’t do this when you know there is a killer on the loose & your best friend was just murdered. On top of it all, Charlie is prone to hallucinations. Uh huh. It’s a long ride back home & Charlie starts getting suspicious of Josh’s stories & is worried about him being the campus killer. Trapped in a car with no escape Charlie has just got to survive the night somehow.
There are so many twists & turns to keep you engaged coupled with a cinematic feel & an almost unpredictable end!
Also, to really enjoy this book you will have to accept the absurdities & let it play out like a 90s b grade thriller movie. LOL
